The Quietus - Spool's Out Best Tapes of 2024

the quietus: "Vienna-based The Concept Horse's More Meaningful Algebra creates captivation in directionlessness.
Aside from a few interludes, the double cassette is packed with concise, bloopy cells on the cusp of rhythmic and textural.
These minimal components don't particularly go anywhere, but neither are they static. They're frameworks undergoing
subtle mutation, each staying for just long enough for you to notice the change (or lack of) before abruptly ending.
What could be irritating, anxiety inducing or just plain tedious evades negativity through sheer persistence and playfulness.
It's wonky and elegant, architectural and kind of bouncy all at once. Like Erik Satie's Furniture Music played by
cranky machines for a room where everything has the consistency of a ping pong ball. It's music that just is,
and in this case that's more than enough."

tobira records: "no one can dance to it!"

unquiet zine: "I've had this on constant rotation for the past few days. Released as a double cassette on Edinburgh's coolest experimental label Molt Fluid,
more meaningful algebra presents us with a syrupy selection of hyper-minimal percussive vignettes which are striking in their repetitiveness... Indeed,
when something does change, or a track ends and another starts, the feeling it conjures is always delightful surprise rather than relief. I'm especially
impressed by the sense of precariousness and instability that underpins the whole album; it's strange - and incredibly impressive - that something
so repetitive also sounds like it's constantly at risk of breaking apart."

felt hat: "This set of two cassettes by the concept horse is a long play of rhythm experiments that make you think of how much you can
achieve not using a vast array of tools and oversaturate your musical output by way too extensive production. Simplistic yet far
from simple, textures and beats that create a poignant hypnagogic atmosphere remind me a bit of 1980s / 1990s experiments of Belgian
artist Alain Neffe as well as plunderphonic approach to creating beats. Woven with minimalistic and eerie sound textures - it's a joy to listen."
